CONSUMER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

The Consumer Science Department offers a program to empower students to develop the knowledge of essential life skills that will be used throughout their lifetime. These courses provide exposure to a variety of consumer areas that will help students reach their greatest potential as productive members of family and society.

SKILLS FOR A LIFETIME
Course 610
Grades 9 Elective Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisites: None

This is a course designed for all college prep level freshmen to empower them to get a positive start in high school and to prepare for their futures. Topics that will be emphasized in this course will include: positive self-esteem, communicating with others, organizational skills, goal setting, healthy food choices, planning and preparing meals, and the responsibilities in caring for children.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT

Grades 10, 11, 12 Elective Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisites: None

This course explores parenting roles and responsibilities, including factors affecting prenatal health of mother and baby. Many aspects of physical, social, emotional and mental growth of children are analyzed. Positive guidance and discipline techniques are taught. This course is beneficial to students who plan to care for children and who are interested in careers such as: education, pediatrics, nursing, psychology and social work.

CULINARY FUNDAMENTALS

Grades 10, 11, 12 Elective Semester 1/2 Credit
Prerequisites: None

This course is designed to help students learn to prepare delicious and nutritious meals. A comprehensive study of various foods will be covered each week. It will include the planning, preparing and serving of foods during the lab period once a week. Other areas included will be: safety and sanitation, measurements, nutrition, cooking techniques, the use of small and large equipment, and mealtime etiquette.
