Theatre Department

Mercy boasts an active curricular and extracurricular theater program. Drama classes seek to cultivate students to the art and craft of theater production. Students attend several performances and workshops a year and learn the basics of stagecraft, theater history, and performance in daily classes.

Each year, Mercy is eligible for awards for acting as well as students' innovative contributions to choreography, music, set, costume, sound, lighting, and hair/makeup design. Mercy drama students perform twice annually with a late fall musical that showcases the many talents of Mercy actors, singers, dancers, and musicians, as well as the spring play. Students explore drama activities relative to their level. Students are introduced to theatrical terms, auditioning skills, pantomime, storytelling, beginning stage make-up, partner scene work, character study, monologue work, stage movement, costuming, and improvisational games. Advanced Drama students prepare for plays that tour area elementary schools and compete and attend area and state competitions and workshops.
